This is why I fight.
Human trafficking is not an issue to simply mourn, despise, or disagree with. If we all find modern slavery to be tragic and wrong, but aren’t moving, then we are allowing it to continue. Let us then sit back and watch as our passivity is used to enslave more and more men, women, and children. Has the issue of human trafficking just been thrown into the pile of other evils in this world that we dare not touch? This horrific enterprise will not end until we take a step past merely hating it.
This is not something that is only happening on the other side of the world, but on the other side of your door as well. May we have eyes to see the brokenness in the streets we live on and in the eyes of those we pass by. May we step out of our comfort zones into the realm of the wicked. Let us not force the captives to fight alone. May we be the hands and feet for the injustices that break the heart of the Creator. May we be a Bride in union with the Spirit of God.
This is why I fight.

A heart change
I was once set to go to Thailand to serve with a ministry that was working to fight sex trafficking there. The trip was cancelled and it was in that season that God told me if I wanted to continue in this fight against human trafficking, I had to do so with a heart full of love, not a heart full of anger and hatred. You see, my heart was built up with hatred and bitterness towards people over the sin and evil itself that there was no place for my hateful heart in God’s ministry. I had to learn the difference between hatred and righteous anger. I had to move from hopelessness toward hope in the God who is bigger and the God who already won. I had to allow my heart to break like His does for even those who commit these injustices. I had to get to a place where my heart burned just as badly for the perpetrators to come to know Jesus and be set free from their sin. My eyes were opened to an entire industry of people needing to know their values as sons and daughters of God.

How the Church can get involved
Did you know that your lifestyle can eradicate human trafficking?
We tend to think of rescue and restoration and wonder “What could I do in that?” But the greatest area that needs your help is in the prevention stage.
If we were living in the Christian design & community that we were called to, slavery would be eradicated. It starts first with knowing your value and telling others of theirs. It’s raising godly boys and girls to know their worth. It’s being examples of what it’s like to treat, love and protect a woman and take care of a family. It’s the Church standing up for the things God cares about and operating in His design. It’s being His hands and feet rather than being distracted and divided. It’s focusing on restoring the family, being the fathers and mothers and disciple-makers we are called to be.
Think about the skills and gifts God has given you and how you can use those to bless a vulnerable population. Are you a crafted woodworker? Teach a young man before he winds up in labor trafficking. Can you sew? Share that gift with a young girl before she sells her body to pay her bills. Build your community up in the gifts and resources God has blessed you and your church with.
Then it’s education. Unfortunately, anyone is at risk but there are more vulnerable populations that are susceptible to being trafficked. Educate yourselves and your kids about the dangers online and beyond. A predator can reach anyone if they know an insecurity or something they are looking for. There’s also education on how certain policies such as border regulations and abortion affect the extremity of human trafficking. It’s standing for leaders in our country that support uniting the family and policies that won’t open more doors for predators or leave people in helpless situations.
Serving in local ministries, mentoring young men and women, and donating to rescue missions, restoration programs, and safehouses are all other ways to use your time and resources.
Be the Church and take action.
May we not be like the pharisees and priest who walk passed the man on the side of the road in the parable of the Good Samaritan but rather actively do what the Father asks of us.
There are many forms of human trafficking but these are the two most prevalent in our world today.
Persons are subjected to engaging in commercial sexual activity through the use of force, fraud, or coercion.
The recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage or slavery.
“Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.” Psalm 82:3
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;” Isaiah 61:1
The Lord cares! We are called to be in union with Him.
- Prayer Requests:
- For the Lord to rain down heavenly justice!
- For Jesus to be revealed to those who do harm just as much as by those who are harmed.
- For supernatural strength and provision for organizations working to fight against this injustice
- For God's nearness, protection and love to surround each captive
- For conviction and God's compassion to overwhelm every perpetrator
- For divine wisdom and intercession in our justice systems
