τετέλεσται. Tetelestai. “It is finished.”
This word was airdropped to me by a stranger on the plane just days before I moved to Hawaii. There’s always been something about other languages that moves my spirit, but this word specifically was pressed on my heart for days until I got hit with the revelation of its simple profoundness. This may seem like the start of a new chapter but it’s not the beginning of my story and it’s absolutely not the beginning of His.
Jesus is often remembered on the cross suffering in our place. I was forever changed when I finally understood what Jesus of Nazareth did for me on that day. I fall more in awe and love every time I remember, but it doesn’t stop there. You see, He offered Himself as the Lamb and then rose again as the Lion. After He bore our punishment, He defeated death, took His seat on the throne and will return one day in all His glory. May we never forget Him as the sacrifice but may we also never forget Him as the victory.
As I step into this season toward an unknown future, I am reminded “tetelestai” and am given the ability to walk in authority and confidence. When you remember the cross you enter into intimacy with your Savior. When you remember His resurrection, all fear, shame, striving, and uncertainty will flee.
May we never forget His crown of thorns and may we never forget His crown of splendor. May we never forget His gentle eyes of love and may we never forget His blazing eyes of fire. May we never forget His broken body and may we never forget His robe of glory. May we never forget the stripes and may we never forget the golden sash. May we never forget His bruised skin and may we never forget His bronze feet. May we never forget the surrendered whisper and may we never forget the voice of rushing waters. May we never forget that He surrendered to the lowest of lows for us but may we never forget that He ascended to the highest of highs and reigns above all for eternity to come.
When I pray, may I remember who I am speaking to — the God in the throne room who is above everything I am praying for and whose presence I am able to enter because of Calvary, because “tetelestai.”
